GAANN Fellows Program in Environmental Engineering and Science at UIUC

The Environmental Engineering and Science Program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is pleased to announce that 3-year fellowships are available for qualified graduate students from the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The GAANN fellowships will be used to enhance the quality and diversity of graduate students in Environmental Engineering and Science at UIUC. U.S. citizens or permanent residents with excellent academic records who plan to pursue a PhD are qualified for consideration.

Key elements of the new GAANN program at UIUC include a comprehensive mentoring program and professional development opportunities. The mentoring program includes a formal support network comprised of peers, faculty, and alumni, as well as a bi-annual assessment of progress. Professional development opportunities include presentations at national and international conferences, proposal and paper writing activities, an international research experience, and a formal program for learning to teach (which includes instruction on teaching pedagogy and mentor-reviewed lectures).

Environmental engineering was listed as one of the top five jobs for 2005 by Yahoo Fast Company based on anticipated industry growth, salary potential, education level, and room for innovation. A greater pool of PhD graduates is needed to fill this area of national need. The GAANN fellows program at UIUC helps to addresses this need by better preparing graduate students to become future leaders in the field. All GAANN fellows will receive an annual stipend of $30,000, plus tuition and fees. Support for the conferences and an international research experience will also be provided.

To be considered for a GAANN fellowship, please submit an application for graduate school in Environmental Engineering and Science in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UIUC. Application details are available at http://www.grad.uiuc.edu/admissions/apply/.
