Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards

Beyond the numerous scholarships, fellowships and awards available to undergraduate and graduate students through the Grainger College of Engineering and the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, the Environmental Engineering and Science program awards area-specific funding for graduate students throughout their education experience at the university providing opportunities for research, career development, and travel.

Abbott Fellowship

The Abbott Fellowship provides funding for top graduate students to do research in the first academic year.

Deuchler Environmental Engineering Fellowship

This fund is established for the support of graduate students in civil engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in direct support of graduate students enrolled in its environmental engineering program in civil engineering. Only students receiving their bachelor’s degree from an engineering discipline at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be eligible for the award. Consideration shall be given especially to students who demonstrate a strong and sincere interest in preparing themselves for a career in environmental engineering, who demonstrate significant leadership potential, and who show high promise of future success in the practice of Environmental Engineering.

Esmilla Memorial Writing Award

Bienvenido Esmilla Writing Award is used to emphasize technical writing of EES MS students. The award was established in 1995 by UI alumnus Ron Esmilla and named after his father. Faculty nominate student single author papers written in the prior calendar year for a class and deal with a technical environmental topic. Papers with considerable input from others, such as thesis, proposals, and papers submitted to journals are not eligible. Awards are based on writing clarity and style and on technical content and presentation. Award consists of a certificate and monetary prize (first place $300, second place $200).

Engelbrecht Fellowship

The goal of the Engelbrecht Fellowship is to honor the memory of Professor Richard S. Engelbrecht and the long-term friendship and support of the Engelbrecht family to our program. Professor Engelbrecht was a pioneer in environmental pollution control, and water and wastewater treatment. This is a faculty nominated award to recognize a Ph.D. student approaching graduation for outstanding scholastic achievement and promise of success in environmental engineering.

Racheff Travel Award

The main purpose is to provide an otherwise-missed opportunity for EES graduate students to participate in national conferences.  We think such an experience is an important component of the students’ education but one that cannot be provided directly by us. Following that overriding principle, we will give higher priority to students who are not already established in a professional career or who are making material changes in their career, who have not already applied for Racheff support (or who have not done so recently or regularly), and/or whose other sources of financial support for travel are low.

Damon S. Williams Scholar

The Fund Assets shall be used to provide scholarships to promising minority graduate students who are studying Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Preference shall be given to those individuals who will study water and wastewater engineering.  The Group Leader of the Environmental Engineering Program, or designee, shall determine the recipients, amount, and timing of the scholarships to be awarded, subject to the approval of the appropriate University officials.  If, in any given year, no students meet the criteria for this scholarship, the award monies shall be returned to the principal of the fund to build the endowment.    Scholarship awards shall be known as the “Damon S. Williams Associates Scholarships” and shall be appropriately recognized and publicized.

EES Fellowship Awards

Each year, after application and acceptance into the EES program, faculty will consider graduate student CVs and award a limited number of area fellowships to provide monetary support.
